Five collections, one standard of fit. Fabric, opacity and mechanism specified for your rooms.
Sun damage is cumulative and almost invisible until it is not. A teak sofa frame loses its depth. A rug fades a shade lighter where the afternoon light crosses it. Hardwood flooring bleaches in a band along the glazing line, and the difference only becomes obvious the day a piece of furniture is moved.
The custom window shades Palm Beach County homeowners fit for this reason are doing measurable work. Solar fabrics are specified by openness factor, which sets how much ultraviolet light is stopped before it reaches the room, and cellular constructions add a thermal layer that reduces heat gain through the glass as well.
What that protects is rarely the shade itself. It is the fine art on the opposite wall, the cabinetry finish in the kitchen, the upholstery you waited eleven weeks for.
Fabric is the hardest thing to choose from a screen. Weave, weight and opacity all read differently under South Florida light than under a showroom’s, and a colour that looked warm on a swatch card can turn grey against your walls.
So a designer brings the swatch books to you. Fabrics are held against the actual wall, at the window they are intended for, at the hour you use the room. Opacity is tested by holding the sample to the glass rather than described in a percentage. Where a house needs more than one collection, and most do, the specification is worked out room by room in front of you.
